The Upward Bound project at Patrick Henry Community College provides year-round educational intervention programs including weekly after-school meetings, college visitations, cultural activities, and Summer Discovery Institute for all participants.
There are no participation costs for selected students, each of whom is expected to maintain a 2.5 grade point average and complete a minimum of two consecutive summers on the PHCC campus.
Each year, sixty-six qualified applicants are chosen to participate in the Upward Bound Summer Discovery Institute and will be invited to attend a six week summer program at Patrick Henry Community College, to include academic classes and career exploration workshops. Students also enroll in stimulating electives such as second language, computers, lab science, and study skills and gain focus through cultural activities, field trips, and college visits.
During the school year, Upward Bound Advisors and Tutors stay in contact with participants, teachers, counselors, and parents. Counselors visit participants in their home schools to improve their English and Math skills.
